Below is a compilation of India’s top 10 most popular and costly lawyers who showed tremendous performance levels in their professions. (Note: These lawyers are all best in their field and we’re not giving them any such rank. It’s just for you to decide after going through their concise work history.)
1.) Ram Jethmalani
Ram Boolchand Jethmalani was one of the most popular lawyer in India. He was a guy of many challenges and skills. He obtained his LLB degree from the Government Law College at Mumbai at age 17. He subsequently graduated from SC Shahani Law School, Karachi, with a LLM certificate.
India’s most known criminal lawyer was Ram Jethmalani. He worked as the Minister of Union Law for India and as a President of India’s Bar Committee. He was even named President of the Supreme Court Bar Association in 2010. His fee was around Rs. 25 lakh which gives him the top spot on the list as the most expensive lawyer of his period.
He speaks elegantly and formidably (even when he was in his 90’s) which made his opponents stammer. He had a strong knowledge of criminal and civil law. Throughout the trial, he was sharp-witted and impressive (this is interesting because he, too, pursued several lawsuits for conscience). He died on Sept, 2019 (at the age of 95) but being so popular cum expensive lawyer his name needs to be on our list of 10 Popular Lawyer of India, as a tribute.
2.) Fali Sam Nariman
He is an Indian legal specialist. Since 1971, he has been a senior advocate at India’s Supreme Court and has been the president of India’s bar association since 1991. Nariman is a jurist who is known worldwide on international arbitration.
He is one of the most distinguished constitutional lawyers in India and has argued a variety of leading cases. He remained Indian Additional Solicitor General from May 1972 to June 1975.
Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Gruber Prize for good Justice were honored to Fali Sam Nariman. He charges nearly Rs. 8-15 lakh for his cases.
3.) Soli Sorabjee
Soli Sorabjee was admitted to the bar in 1953, after studying law from the Government Law College in Mumbai. Sorabjee was awarded the Kinloch Forbes Gold Medal in Roman Law and Jurisprudence at his law school.
In 1971, Sorabjee was appointed Senior Advocate of the Indian Supreme Court. He is also reported to have worked as India’s Solicitor General from 1977-1980 and from 1998-2004 he was elected India’s Attorney General. He has been honored with Padma Vibhushan for his defense of the freedom of expression and the protection of human rights. Sorabjee has held numerous positions in regional and globally recognized organizations and charges somewhere between 5-10 lakh as his fees.
4.) Gopal Subramanium
He is a senior lawyer who mainly works in India’s Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court. He has also served as India’s Solicitor General from 2009-2011. He handled cases such as OBC quota in central educational institutions and sealing of commercial buildings in Delhi residential areas. Subramanium also represented the Government in many judicial cases.
Through his tenure as Solicitor General, he also served as Chairman of India’s Bar Council. Subramanium was honoured with the National Law Day Award for Outstanding Jurist. It was awarded to him by the President of India in 2009 for his consistent professional excellence and adherence to the Bar’s highest standards during his tenure as a law officer. He charges Rs. 6 to 15 lakh for his cases.
5.) Abhishek Manu Singhvi
Is an Indian solicitor and famous politician. As a politician, he became a member of the Indian National Congress (INC). And a new member of the Indian Parliament representing West Bengal in the Upper House of Rajya Sabha. He is also the INC’s spokesperson. Besides that, he is a senior Indian Supreme Court Counsel.
His special fields of professional interest are corporate law, constitutional law, business law, civil law, and international trade arbitrations. At age 37 he became India’s youngest additional solicitor general. He charges his fee in-between Rs 6 to 11 Lakh.
6.) K. K. Venugopal
Kottayan Katankot Venugopal commonly known as K. K. Venugopal is an Indian constitutional lawyer and a senior advocate in India’s Supreme Court.
On 30 June 2017, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he was appointed Attorney General of India. In fact, the Bhutan government once hired him to consult while drafting their Constitution. His fee varies between Rs. 5 and 8 lakhs per case.
Over the last 50 years, he’s worked in a number of cases. In the high profile 2 G spectrum case, Venugopal was named as an amicus curiae to support the Supreme Court.
7.) Mukul Rohatgi
He is a senior lawyer in India’s Supreme Court. He has also previously worked as Indian Additional Solicitor General. He is known for his exceptional argumentative ability and confidence. And as his clients, he has politicians, celebrities and business giants.
He handled numerous top cases like of Gujarat government (in the Supreme Court) for 2002 Gujarat riots and fake encounter death cases of the Best Bakery and Zahira Sheikh cases. He charges in-between 2-5 lakhs as his fees.
8.) Harish Salve
Lawyer Harish Salve, who battled India’s case against the death penalty awarded to Kulbhushan Jadhav by Pakistan at the International Court of Justice, charged only Rs 1 as his fee. Nevertheless, India’s ex-Solicitor General usually charges its clients somewhere between Rs 6-15 lakh.

9.) Ashok Desai
Lawyer Ashok Desai has held the position of Attorney General of India from 1996 to 1998, he also holds the title of Solicitor General of India and it was from 1989 to 1990. Desai is the Vice President of the Bar Association of India and President of the Inns of Court (India) Society.
He was awarded Padma Bhushan. He is one of India’s top lawyers. He began practicing as a lawyer in 1956, appeared in several cases in various benches and in India’s Supreme Court, most notably he appeared in government organizations for public life and accountability cases.
10.) C. Aryama Sundaram
C. Aryama Sundaram is an Attorney from India. He was named Senior Advocate. He has frequently represented the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Anil Ambani and many other high-profile businessmen are some of his prestigious clients for whom he worked.
Sundaram primarily studies corporate law but also takes up cases relating to constitutional law and the media. He was a solicitor in the S. Rangarajan case that resulted in one of the landmark judgments on freedom of expression and speech. His fee ranges from Rs. 5.5 lakh-16.5 lakh.
